Oh deer ...

It's nice to have friends who give away deer meat; now we have the bottom of the freezer filled with free deer :)

We bagged it up ... but know nothing about the different cuts. We figure it will all cook about the same in the crock pot anyway. We put some aside to make jerky with, and a few aside that looked like steaks and roasts.

If you have a good recipe for deer, please share!

  1. Deer roasts and shoulders can be dry, even when cooked in the crock pot sometimes. I like to add 2 c beef broth, made with the better than boullion. I put that in the crock pot with it and the venison comes out juicy and tender. Just make sure you leave it in there past being done time. It should fall apart. We also bought a cuber from Cabelas I think. It was just $17. but we can cube the meat and it is very tender and easy to do.

  2. Thank you for the tips! I found that cooking deer with lots of onions and garlic (and other spicy stuff) takes the 'gamey' edge off (I'm sure that's not a word!). We are thankful for this free meet!

Our pastor works with cattle - if he knows why a cow died and knows it's safe to eat, the men here butcher it and we all share it. I now have several pounds of free beef in my freezer, and a sister gave me 10qts of canned beef. God is good!

    Thank you for your comment.
